Let me ask you a simple question - assuming you are personally concerned with dysfunction in your possessions -
Are you free, as in freedom ?
Are you free to make your own choices with everything in your personal life - to arrange your space the way you prefer, to allocate time and money how you prefer - or is it under strain and/or constraint from someone or something else - limiting your choices, giving you orders, claiming resources ? I'm not talking about the usual "suspects" like job, law, physics... Nor am I talking about the usual talking points from the "experts" on "hoarding" - supposed "emotional attachment", "difficulty making decisions", "difficulty discarding" - that's skipping to the end and oversimplifying it.
I have a hypothesis -
Most, if not all, cases of what they call "hoarding", a "mental illness", and what I call simply Dysfunction in Possessions, are going to involve people who are unfree.
Even for people living alone, this will be the case - including upbringing and imperatives given to them by their parents, peers, society at large, the "experts" on "hoarding", etc.
I may be wrong about this, but I'm probably right.
To be discussed.
