Well, I did the exact same thing - with the mainstream "Hoarding" theories.
And I found them to be.. as inflated and as fraudulent as the onetime Mortgage Backed Securities, the thing at the heart of the huge financial crisis.
Just wanted to mention this metaphor - it is highly apt.
