Room For Maneuvering ( RFM ): Absolutely Essential ; When Allocating Space, Plan For Significantly More, Not "Barely Enough"

When organizing, you don't just need space for storing things - you also need space for moving around, and for making the containers accessible for working with actively, for restacking / opening / placing back into stacks if applicable.

It is a mistake to allocate just barely enough space to contain the overflow - and this is perhaps the scenario that happens commonly.

A Dysfunction in Possessions arises ; a person has the right idea that more space is needed, and they allocate some, and they do.

But, they only allocate the bare minimum needed to contain the overflow, to "uncompress" fully or partially.

They don't allocate enough to get back to full operational state, where they can *actually* reorganize, move around, set up additional containers.

When facing insufficient space to move around, to work and to deploy additional containers, the situation is like a game of chess, or whatever game you prefer, where you're out of moves, you're stuck - any move you make makes the situation worse.

If you deploy a new container, where do you put it ? Existing stacks / shelves are already full ; if you create an additional stack, where will you put it, again ? It will end up blocking access somewhere, resulting in loss of ability to work further.

There's the ( obvious ) impulse to purge, to discard something - exactly the solution recommended by the "experts" - but, this will only gain you so much, and you're still working with an incomplete and only partly restored organizing system.

Bad, inefficient, insufficient solutions all around.

That's why, when allocating additional space, whether on temporary, medium-term or permanent basis, it's important to *over-provision* - to allocate significantly more than currently expected - so that the amount of space becomes not just sufficient, but abundant.

Otherwise, dysfunction in possessions will continue and you'll still be out of moves.
