Let's first consider the "real" - big-name - TV Shows on "Hoarding" - showing serious dysfunctional sistuations.
I honestly cannot watch these anymore without pain, because I easily recognize all the tricks they are doing.
These shows are a spectacle of abuse, not therapy, built on these toxic elements:
* Outlier Fallacy / Selection Bias ( the worst of the worst cases are presented - but the audience sees this as typical )
* Normalization of Coercion ("nagging and yelling" - clearly toxic behaviors by family members, with the experts standing by )
* False Time Constraint ( "we must complete it all in a few days" ) - in a situation that developed for years, maybe decades - see Stop and Think .. Fabricated Urgency Is The Hallmark Of Scammers.
* Deceptive "Fairytale Ending."
.. among others.
Narration is rife with manipulation as usual, perhaps significantly more concentrated than usual ( or about the same ), targeted at viewers. Sometimes, I have this distinct feeling that the expert involved is power tripping, as they gleefully force the person to "make a decision" ( to discard ), and "right now, or else" - "that skip needs to be filled this much today..".
Now, there is another type of TV Shows on "Hoarding" - and that is the.. Fake ones.
These usually involve a more or less regular person / family, portrayed as a "hoarding" situation, plus a professional organizer / hoarding consultant, and an acutioneer.
Some excessive possessions, some antiques, some stuff they are on the fence about how to let it go.
The consultants come in, possessions are cleaned up / sold off, owners make a few bucks, everyone is happy.
The problem is, these aren't actual "hoarders", as bogus as the definiton of "hoarding" is - these are just some people with some antiques, who are perfectly happy to let go of anything, especially for a few bucks.
This is what I call "Auction P0rn".
While not as disturbing as the "real" "hoarding" shows, these are also toxic - because they mislead people in different ways.
I can say with great certainty that there isn't a single healthy, holistic "hoarding" show episode out there - I'd love to be corrected.
And, the main reason why a holistic treatment episode isn't happening - aside from this not being supported by the existing frameworks by "experts" - because it's not interesting - slow, calm, patient, respectful engagement over weeks and months, without shovel and dumpster action - that is downright boring.. Healthy and normal - boring.
